Agência FAPESP – The State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) will host the São Paulo School of Advanced Science on Contemporary Logic, Rationality and Information (SPLogIC) on February 6-17, 2023. The event will celebrate the ninetieth birthday of Professor Newton da Costa, mathematician, logician and philosopher, and the forty-fifth anniversary of the university’s Center for Logic, Epistemology and History of Science (CLE-UNICAMP).
The event is for undergraduates, graduates and early-career researchers, and is funded by FAPESP via its São Paulo School of Advanced Science (SPSAS) program.
According to the organizers, its main aims are to provide an overview of state-of-the-art methodology and research on contemporary logic, rationality and information, and to attract qualified candidates to work at research institutions in São Paulo state.
The program will comprise eight courses and nine keynote addresses delivered in English by experts on each topic, as well as oral presentations and poster sessions by students. Keynote speakers will be leading researchers in logic, artificial intelligence, information, probability and rationality from Belgium, Brazil, China, Italy, Israel, Poland, Russia and the United States.
The speakers from abroad will include Diderik Batens, Emeritus Professor Ordinarius of Ghent University (Belgium), known most of all for his work in adaptive and paraconsistent logic; Israeli mathematician Arnon Avron, Professor at Tel Aviv University’s School of Computer Science and a researcher in the field of artificial intelligence; and Elena Dragalina-Chernaya, Head of the International Laboratory of Logic, Linguistics and Formal Philosophy at HSE University’s School of Philosophy and Cultural Studies (Russia), with research in metaphysics, epistemology and logic.
Topics to be covered include History and Philosophy of Paraconsistent Logic; Australian, Belgian, Brazilian, Israeli and Polish Schools of Paraconsistency; Logic and Reasoning; Logic and Information; Logic and Argumentation; Methodological Aspects of Interpreting, Translating and Combining Logics; and Logic, Probability and Artificial Intelligence.
Undergraduates, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from all countries are encouraged to apply. The organizers will select 100 applicants, 50 from all parts of Brazil and 50 from abroad. Attendee expenses will be fully funded, including air travel, medical insurance, accommodation and meals throughout the event.
