Values-Based behavior under COVID-19 is the theme of a webinar promoted by FAPESP

Renowned scientists will address topics related to how society has been coping with this threatening environment and will discuss factors that influence behavioral change.

Agência FAPESP – In the absence of a vaccine or drug treatment, there is an urgent need for change in collective behaviors. Values-Based behavior under COVID-19 will be the theme of the next FAPESP COVID-19 Webinar that will be held on November 4th. 

The widespread polarization between compliance versus rejection of guidelines issued by health and government authorities to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is a matter of concern. The webinar will cover relevant topics and deepen the discussions in collective behavior field.

It will be broadcasted from 10 to 12 a.m (UTC - 03:00). Academic community and journalists are invited to register at fapesp.br/eventos/covid6/registration and join the Webinar on Agência FAPESP’s YouTube Channel. Luiz Eugênio Mello, FAPESP’s Scientific Director, will welcome the speakers. The moderator will be Deisy G. de Souza, from the Federal University of São Carlos, Brazil.

Experts on social and behavioral sciences will describe how society has been coping with this threatening environment and will discuss factors that influence behavioral change and the prospects for global public health. 

Four speakers were invited to present the results of their studies. Ortwinn Renn (Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies and University of Stuttgart) will talk about “Behavioral responses towards COVID-19 threats and governmental measures: What triggers compliance?”

“Using social and behavioral science to support COVID-19 pandemic response” is the title of a lecture from Paulo Boggio. A Professor at Mackenzie Presbyterian University, Boggio was one of the researchers who contributed to an article on the same topic, published April 30th at Nature Human Behavior. 

The article’s first author was Jay Van Bavel (New York University), also a speaker at FAPESP COVID-19 Research Webinar. In the paper, the researchers have identified several insights for effective response to the COVID-19 pandemic and highlighted important gaps researchers should move quickly to fill in the coming months. During  FAPESP’s webinar, Bavel’s presentation will address the topic “For better or worse: The role of social identity in the Pandemic”. 

Next speaker is Martha Hubner (University of São Paulo), who will contribute to the conference talking about contingencies – “With no vaccine and facing an invisible virus, the ‘treatment’ is behavioral: Identifying and managing the contingencies that act on people during the COVID-19 pandemic days”.
